As I go through this journey called life, one of the things I cherish the most is my friendships – it’s not so much where I am going or where I have been, it’s the company I’ve been able to keep. You can’t travel through life by yourself. My journey has been all the more precious and valuable because of the women who have shared it with me. In addition to my own mother, there have been lots of women who have been like mothers to me. They would always say things like “chart your own course”, or “be your best self”, and despite these sounding corny, they really do help shape you into the person you eventually become. When I think about other people who’ve mentored me, my father [singer Nat King Cole] was a great example of a wise man. As I got older, I realised my father didn’t have to give speeches to inspire people. Instead, he was a walking example of how to treat people – through the values he felt were important, his integrity and the way he felt about his work, too. I think the most important figures in my life are the ones I’ve observed, not necessarily the people who always had something to say.
