Carla Bruni, 40, model, singer & wife of French president Nicolas Sarkozy
 |
He rules one of Europe’s great nations and she rules every man she meets. The marriage in February of French president Nicolas Sarkozy, 53, and his supermodel bride Carla Bruni, 40, raised eyebrows, coming less than three months after they met. Critics wonder how long it will last, with Sarkozy on his third marriage and Bruni – whose former lovers include Mick Jagger – having made her somewhat disdainful views on marriage quite clear in the past (“I’m monogamous from time to time, but I prefer polygamy and polyandry,” she has said, and, “I am a tamer of men, a cat, an Italian. Monogamy bores me terribly”). But this time ’round the “man-eater” may have met her match. Bruni has said her attraction to the president was “immediate”. “I didn’t expect someone so funny,” she told the authors of La Véritable Histoire de Carla et Nicolas, a biography of their short relationship. “I was seduced by his looks, his charm and his intelligence.” Sarkozy, for his part, has showered his new love with expensive jewellery, trips on private planes and reportedly clears his schedule to spend more time with her. Whether theirs will be a happily-ever-after is unclear. But, for now, the temptress seems to see beyond the trimmings of her man and loves what lies beneath. “I never felt power or fame was important when you’re in love,” Bruni has said. “When you have a relationship with someone, they become a man.”
