parting ways

Parting your hair is a low-maintenance way to update your style. Centre partings can bring out the hippie in you, while sweeping hair to the side should come with an electric guitar. Hairstylist and salon owner Barney Martin, of Sydney’s Barney Martin Hairdressing, says where you part your hair should be dictated by the shape of your face, your hairline, how your hair falls and whether you have kinks or licks in your hair. For example, “Round faces should avoid a parting that falls low on the forehead as they shorten the face and can accentuate roundness, but if your face is oval or more angular you can go ultra-low,” he says. The best way to reveal your natural part is to comb all your hair back when wet, place your palm flat on the crown of your head and press hair slightly forward. Your hair will then divide itself naturally, so be guided by this. While using too many products can make it harder to part, a styling mousse is great for taming unruly hair and a strong-hold gel works well for sharper styles. “Just don’t forget your fine-toothed comb for precision,” Martin adds.
