Hair trends come and go, but we will still hanker for classic ad-hair locks. Here, the experts behind hair beauty shoots to get their insider tips and tricks (wind machine not included).
It’s seriously shiny
Stylists have a variety of ways to shine up hair: Renya Xydis often sends models to her salon for a pre-shoot glossing treatment; for Joh Bailey, TRESemmé hair expert on Project Runway, it’s all in the blow-dry; stylist Anthony Nader polishes hair with a natural-bristled brush and Toni & Guy group creative director Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck advises a cold-water rinse to close down the cuticle before styling. But there’s one gloss-enhancer they all agree on: spray shine. “I mist it on to mid-lengths and ends before ironing, because the natural oils of hair don’t travel this far,” says Dale Dorning, Delta Goodrem's personal stylist. “And just before the shot, I spray some shine into the air and get the model to walk through it. It’s that easy.”
For Xydis, it’s not only the ease of use, but also the lightness of the formula that wins her vote. “A spray shine is nice and light, whereas a serum can get too heavy,” she notes.
Speaking of lights – it would be remiss to ignore what is arguably the key factor in creating shine. “Hair requires specific lighting,” says photographer Carlotta Moye. “You have to light the hair separately to the face and to the whole picture.”
Bailey is quick to separate fantasy from fact. “That shine you see in ads is not real-life,” he says. “It’s not like you walk around with a spotlight over your head.”
Special effects
• To create a wet look – without clumpiness – Dorning douses Delta Goodrem’s hair in olive oil.
• Stylist Dario Cotroneo often blow-dries castor oil into hair for mega-watt shine – although has also been known to slather hair in K-Y gel (personal lubricant) for the highest gloss finish.
