model hair secrets: length
Hair trends come and go, but we will still hanker for classic ad-hair locks. Here, the experts behind hair beauty shoots to get their insider tips and tricks (wind machine not included).
It’s long and thick (or pretends to be) “Women aspire to long hair, whether they will ever have it or not,” says Joh Bailey, TRESemmé hair expert on Project Runway. “You’re not going to sell a product by showing hair an inch long. If hair is short, there are lots of ends – and ends don’t shine.” The longer the hair, the more styling possibilities. “I like to work with hair that’s somewhere between shoulder and bra-strap length,” says stylist Anthony Nader. “I also look for naturally thick hair. If a model has six hairs on her head, it makes it very tricky.” “Sorry to shatter the illusion, but a lot of girls I work with don’t have long, thick hair,” says ghd ambassador Jayne Wild, who creates her own illusions with hairpieces that she cuts and glues in temporarily. “Adding hair is really common these days, both in shoots and in real life,” says Bailey, who recommends Jessica Simpson’s Hairdo line of clip-in extensions, whether for length, thickness – or a dose of both. “You can fake so much these days,” he adds, “so why not your hair?”
Special effects • If hair in a photo shoot is flying out to the side, there’s probably a stylist standing offside, holding a hair-dryer, waving a piece of cardboard or flicking fishing wire through hair. • To make hair look voluminous, stylists often push it forward, leaving nothing but clips at the back.
