model hair secrets: dirty hair

Hair trends come and go, but we will still hanker for classic ad-hair locks. Here, the experts behind hair beauty shoots to get their insider tips and tricks (wind machine not included).

It’s actually a little dirty
“I ask models to wash their hair the night before a shoot,” says stylist Anthony Nader. “This allows the natural oils to come through and it makes the hair easier to work with.”
For the same reason, many stylists sprinkle dry shampoo on to the roots. “You want hair to look clean, but like it’s two days old, like it’s been lived in,” says Brad Ngata, artistic director for KMS. “Dry shampoo does this by putting some texture back into the hair.”
It is also a godsend for stylists when models turn up with dirty hair – whether they’ve just come from a hair product-laden shoot or a night on a dance floor. “In this case, I use a scented dry shampoo to soak up oil and disguise odour,” says stylist Michael Brennan.
