model hair secrets: colour
Hair trends come and go, but we will still hanker for classic ad-hair locks. Here, the experts behind hair beauty shoots to get their insider tips and tricks (wind machine not included).
It’s (mostly) dark Darker shades play up best to the camera. “A warm, rich, mid-brown is my preferred shade,” says Joh Bailey, TRESemmé hair expert on Project Runway. “When you are working with darker shades, you can also use a variety of semi-permanents, which often increase shine.” Stylists usually request semis be applied a week before the shoot. “This gives the colour time to settle and look the most natural,” notes Brad Ngata, artistic director for KMS. Dark hair, however, has a tendency to photograph as a block colour, which is why Renya Xydis prefers to work with blondes and redheads. “Dark is easier to make look gorgeous, but lighter is best for showing texture,” she explains, and often sends models into her salon for a pre-shoot glossing treatment. Highlights also give fairer hair extra life, although stylist Anthony Nader warns against the high-level bleach variety, which can strip moisture and shine. “Models should stay within their hair colour family. This way, their hair will look natural and healthy.”
