how to get celebrity hair: Rachel Bilson

Zoe has shoulder-length hair and wants impossibly long tresses, à la Rachel Bilson. Her hair is fine and lank, and she wants to play with volume.

Will It Suit Her?
“Zoe’s long neck and height make her the perfect candidate for this super-long hair,” says Kenneth Stoddart. “We want to enhance her own hair without weighing it down, so we are going to customise clip-in extensions by cutting layers into them. This keeps the hair looking soft.” Layering hair this long is essential, otherwise it drags and looks clunky.

The Style
Stoddart suggests the new clip-in extensions from Original Diva (single clip-in inserts from $10.95, originaldiva.com.au). They are 100 per cent human hair and come in a range of lengths and 18 colours and are easy to position with a non-slip clip-in system. “They are great for adding thickness and length for a special event,” Stoddart says. “The beauty of them is you can also use a ghd and curling tong on them.” The trick is to get your stylist to fit and cut them to suit. “Then you can play around with them yourself,” he says. “They are a great no-damage option as they don’t place stress on the root of the hair. We are using the 50cm extensions and making them look soft and modern by tapering the ends, which gives good movement.” Stoddart refers to them as “the false eyelashes of hair”. In short, these create great party locks.

Maintenance
“It’s best not to use too much product, as this just makes the hair get dirtier more quickly,” Stoddart says. “Use a polishing milk (such as Outshine 01 Anti-Frizz Polishing Milk, $27, by Redken, 1300 650 170), to smooth the fluffy bits. Polishing milks look creamy and are a bit like a hand cream – they create texture, but also make the hair look clean.” To care for extensions, fill a basin with warm water, add a tiny bit of shampoo, handwash, rinse, apply conditioner (try Fortifying Shampoo and Fortifying Cream Conditioner, $5.69, by Garnier Fructis, 1300 659 259), then rinse with cold water. Roll them up in a towel to remove excess water, lay them out to dry, then they’re ready to style. “One tip for blow-drying is to wedge the weft [the scalp end] of the extension into a drawer and work the dryer down from there,” Stoddart says. “When ironing or tonging, work them in with your own hair.” This is red-carpet hair on steroids.
