green beauty: glossary
NATURAL This is a very loose definition that can be applied to anything from a cream made almost entirely of ingredients sourced directly from nature (plants, minerals, algae), to one that contains a few nature-derived components. The key is to learn how to read labels or shop among brands that pride themselves on being natural beauty specialists.
ORGANIC This refers to a particular method of farming, harvesting and distribution. Generally, to be classified as organic, farmers must meet very strict standards. One key component is the prohibition of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers. In Australia, however, there are no regulations over the use of the term “organic”. Any brand is legally able to use the word, regardless of whether the product actually contains any organic ingredients. Read the label and research the brands you buy.
CERTIFIED ORGANIC If a product carries a certification stamp, it boasts a high level of organic content. There are two Australian bodies that currently provide seals to personal care products – NASAA (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia) and OFC (Organic Food Chain). Also look out for international seals from Europe’s Ecocert, the UK’s Soil Association and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
BIODYNAMIC Biodynamic farming shares many similarities with its organic sister – such as a commitment to sustainability – but is a much more detailed and spiritual approach. First introduced by German philosopher Rudolf Steiner in 1924, biodynamic farming aims to optimise growth cycles by taking into account the rhythmic influences of the sun, moon and stars.
VEGAN Vegan products do not contain any animal or animal-derived ingredients, such as tallow, emu oil or honey. Some may be certified – the Vegan Society is one company that offers a certification process.
