tips for grocery shopping

body challenge 2008 health tips: grocery shopping

• Make a shopping list before you leave home and stick to it.
• Avoid shopping on an empty stomach.
• Be aware of the serving sizes on the food labels. Often they are much smaller than you’d actually consume.
• Avoid the end-of-aisle and register shopping items. These impulse purchases tend to be junk foods.
• Develop the habit of reading and comparing food labels (nutrition panels). Educate yourself as to the best choices for you.
• Opt for fresh ingredients over processed foods.
• Choose low-fat cheese rather than reduced-fat cheese, which is not necessarily low in fat.
• Be aware of the carbohydrate content of many low-fat foods.
• Choose the leanest possible meat at the butcher.
• Be aware of the terms “light” and “lite” – they do not always mean low-fat.
• Add fish and seafood to your diet on a regular basis.
