With the launch of his new fragrance, Island Capri, designer Michael Kors reveals his inspiration and what brings him back to this mediterranean idyll.
Why is Capri your “destination” fragrance? I absolutely love the relaxed glamour of the place. The island itself is so beautiful; the crystal blue waters that surround it and the people are so glamorous. There is always somewhere amazing to shop and there’s nothing better than lying by the pool at my favourite hotel, the Grand Hotel Quisisana (via Camerelle 2, Capri, Italy, +39 081 837 0788 or online at quisi.it).
Tell us about the Island Capri fragrance. I wanted to create a fragrance that embodies Capri’s elegance, so everyone could experience a piece of it. I would call it a sparkling floral. The top notes are all native to Capri: orange bigarade, Italian basil, bergamot and island cypress.
What do you like to do when you go to Capri? Capri is an incredible place because it has so many lifestyles in just one day. You wake up in the morning to the quiet sounds of birds as you’re on your way to the beach. You spend your day in the sun, overlooking the Mediterranean, at a beach club. Then it’s time for an amazing lunch and perhaps a little people-watching and shopping. The next thing you know, you are getting ready to look fabulous for a night on the town.
What are your favourite things to buy in Capri? People always ask me to bring back a pair of amazing Capri sandals. They are the best in the world, from the simple rustic ones to the incredibly ornate, jewel-encrusted versions.
What three fashion items should one take to Capri? You must always pack a pair of white jeans. They take you anywhere you need to go on the island. You should also have a stack of coloured cashmere sweaters in shades of coral and turquoise, as these set off sun-kissed skin. The third must-have definitely has to be a pair of gold sandals.
And how should this be worn? For a day at the beach you will need an oversized straw hat and an incredible bikini with your gold sandals. At night, take out the jewels. Even when you’re wearing a pair of white jeans with a cashmere sweater over your shoulders, there’s something glamorous about going to dinner in Capri wearing incredible earrings with casual clothes.
