Iconic author J.D. Salinger, writer of the hugely influential novel
The Catcher in the Rye, died this week at age 91.
The notoriously reclusive author, said to be one of the most important American writers of the 20th Century, died of natural causes in the 90-acre compound he had lived in for over 50 years. Salinger was best known for
Catcher, a cult classic among the younger generations which still sells tens of thousand copies a year. John Lennon's killer, Mark David Chapman, famously cited the novel as an explanation for his act, saying "this extraordinary book holds many answers."
Salinger, whose full name was Jerome David Salinger, also gained critical acclaims for his other works, which included
Franny and Zooey, Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters, Seymour --
An Introduction, and a short story collection called
Nine Stories.
