madison water cooler: our best 2011 achievements

In preparation for all of those new year’s resolutions, we’ve been discussing what we’ve proudly ticked off our lists from last year.

While we may not have managed our “cut out chocolate” vows (which is probably best for our sanity) it seems their’s been something in the water at the madison office because 2011 has been a very productive year.

On my personal list - I’ve managed to up my dessert intake which I counteracted by running the City 2 Surf, I’ve ticked China and Bali off, what our lifestyle editor Lauren refers to as, my ‘places I’ve been’ list, I've spent much more money than I should have (please refer to my ‘places I’ve been’ list) and, the thing I’m happiest about, I’ve been able to help out the wonderfully talented team here at madison!

So we’d love to know, what’s the best thing you achieved in 2011? Below staffers discuss theirs…

Nicholas Fonseca, features and news editor:
I reached a 15-year anniversary with my partner and the love of my life, Ben. We’re not married (yet), but we might as well be. Take note, Julia!

Lauren Powell, lifestyle editor:
Adding more amazing destinations to the ‘places I’ve been’ list: New York City and Central America (Costa Rica, Belize, Nicaragua etc.)

Isabel Sandercock-Brown, acting editorial co-ordinator:

My greatest achievement in 2011, isn’t something that I would necessarily consider an ‘achievement’ but I do consider it to be the greatest thing that happened to me this year, and that was temporarily joining the madison team full time. It’s not an achievement, for I don’t deserve credit, as I am just very, very lucky. Not only is this the most amazing opportunity, as I get to work for a magazine I love, but the madison team are so wonderful and I enjoy every day I spend in the madison office.

Sandy Dao, senior designer:
Climbing Mt Kinabalu (Borneo’s tallest mountain) in August with two of my close friends. The best adventure by far.

Liz Elton, deputy art director:
I ran the City 2 Surf – a small, but proud achievement for someone who up until two years ago hadn’t done any exercise since high school!

Jessica Montague, writer and sub-editor:
I ran a marathon last year, but can that still count?! Otherwise …this year I became an aunty for the first time. Prior to this, I have always been the one who “passes” when asked if I willingly want to hold a child. I found them repugnant at worst, squeamish at best. But now, I just want to spend hours cuddling my nephew Tomas. For the record he doesn’t even have ankles. Just rolls and rolls of chubbiness and then feet.

Katrina Lawrence, contributing beauty editor:
I’m not sure if you could call a couple of weeks in Paris an achievement, although it was certainly a feat to find the time in my schedule (oh, and money in my budget) and then to convince my husband and son to let me go. Actually, considering my Parisian trip made me a much happier person for the rest of the year (shopping and sipping champagne all day … how could it not?), it probably could well be defined as an achievement. And it most definitely achieved a nice new wardrobe for me.

Stephanie Darling, beauty director:
Aided and abetted in getting my son Jonah’s 120 hours driving up. He got his P’s first go. Yay. Only down side is I don’t often see my car.

Nathalie Agussol, fashion editor:
Got a new job! Here!

Sophie Miura, picture and production editor:
I finally made it to Greece! I’ve been dreaming of the white washed buildings and pink bougainvillea of Santorini since I will little and have always wanted to visit during the European summer. This year I finally did!
