Culture: the 10 celebs you should follow on twitter

Hollywood is in the grip of a week-long Oscar hangover, which means there hasn’t been much news for me to make fun of report upon. So I’m keeping it light(er than usual) this week, and offering my recommendations of 10 Celebrities You Need To Be Following On Twitter. Here goes!

Steve Martin Earlier this week, the reliably funny actor zinged Gwyneth Paltrow after she posted a snap she’d taken with him and Martin Short with the caption “I love my life.” Steve reposted the shot, and captioned it, “I hate my life.” Genius.

Cher The ne plus ultra of batshit crazy on Twitter. Funny, outrageous, impassioned and most of the time? Completely clueless. Here’s the proof.

Alec Baldwin Thoughtful, crabby, intellectual and surprisingly responsive to his followers. Check him out.

Cloris Leachman Like the crazy old nana you always wished you had in your life (instead of the cranky racist who smells like moth balls). Sample tweet: “It’s #Fridaythe13th! I’m tempting fate by walking under ladders, breaking a mirror, and getting a black cat. Let’s do this!”

Mindy Kaling Or: the second coming of Tina Fey. The Office star and writer always has something adorably hysterical to say. To wit: “Chris Pine's so hot in this movie I was transported from it to inside of Chris Pine's childhood bedroom in 1992 where i took his virginity”

Kathy Griffin I don’t actually need to explain why you need more Kathy Griffin in your life, do I?

Lady Gaga A shining example of how a pop star can use social media for good. Take some lessons.

Rihanna A shining example of how a pop star can use social media for ill. Take some lessons.

Kim Kardashian I don’t actually follow her, what with my blanket ban of all things Kardashian. But…you know, if you want to keep tabs on the continuing downfall of western civilisation, well, watch this space.

Bill Maher Lovers of American politics should look no further than the weaselly (but generally spot-on) comedian and rabble-rouser, who usually puts the US’ ridiculous system into perfect.

Nicholas Fonseca is madison’s features and news editor. You can follow him on Twitter at @NFonseca78
