starting your own garden

I’d love to get started on my own garden but don’t know where to start – can you help me?
The main elements of any garden include hardscaping, softscaping, irrigation, drainage, lights and water features. You should also take into consideration how long you want to spend in your garden. For example, is it the type of garden you want to simply ‘pretty-up’ your house, or do you want it to be a labor of love, a retreat, and something you nurture and tend to on the weekends? Both types of garden will require different plants and lay-outs.

With the climate changes we’re currently facing, consider buying a tank. There are different options for irrigating your garden - drip systems water plants at their roots, or there are above-ground sprinkling systems. You’ll need to also commit to maintaining the soil. Make sure it’s hoed and separated to allow for proper drainage. Mulching your garden to conserve moisture is also a good idea, as is covering it in manure to supply vital nutrients.

Finally, think about investing in any special features. Lighting your garden can help create an atmosphere for both day and night, with features of the garden illuminated to draw the eye to them. Options include a timed floor system, fairy lights in trees, spot lighting, and in-ground solar lighting. Water features such as fountains or ponds can offer a decorative, tranquil and calming element to a garden. Various coloured sandstone statues and edging can also lend a decorative element to a garden, allowing it to reflect your individual style.
