Health news: beet it

It’s a superfuel, it’s a superfood… well, actually, it’s both. It's beetroot and it’s being hailed as a new ‘it’ health food. We all know what beetroot is, we’ve enjoyed it in summer salads and on burgers, but what many people aren’t aware of is how fantastic the health benefits really are.

Beetroot is low in fat and calories (der!) and contains potassium, calcium and fibre (this we didn't know). It's a great source of natural antioxidants, including vitamin C and B and also consists of silica, which is vital for healthy skin, fingernails, ligaments, tendons and bones. Not only is it made up of all these important vitamins and minerals, it also has anti-carcinogenic properties and is known to be a blood building food. The vegetable boosts the body’s defence systems, cleanses the liver, gall bladder and spleen, as well as regenerates immune cells. Superfood indeed!

With all these benefits, it seems we should be eating beetroot every day, all day. However, it isn’t exactly an easy food to carry around with you and snack on during the day. A new product, BEET IT has found a way for you to receive all the benefits of beetroot in an easy way – a drink! The main benefits of BEET IT can be attributed to the high content of Nitric Oxide. A study conducted by Wake Forest University’s Translational Science Centre for the Nitric Oxide: Biology and Chemistry journal has shown that Nitric Oxide turns nitrates into nitrites, which helps dilate the blood vessels to increase blood and oxygen flow. The study has also shown that the health benefits of regularly drinking beet juice are long-term.

Now, although pretty in colour, the thought of drinking beetroot is slightly unsettling (superfood or not, it’s not your typical daily juice) but nonetheless, madison pride themselves on being willing to try anything and five staff members stepped up to the test:

Lauren Powell, madison’s lifestyle editor, “I like vegetable drinks so I like it and I’ve had beetroot juices before. I’d happily just eat beetroot by itself! I don’t know what I like about it, but I really like it.”

Lara Bayliss, madison’s fashion office coordinator, “I don’t mind it. It’s a bit strange having beetroot in liquid form but I’d drink it for the health benefits more than the taste.”

Jessica Montague, madison's writer/sub-editor, “I like it! I can tell it has something else in it. I normally add things to beetroot juice when I have it, because of the strong taste. I like beetroot though, so I give it a thumbs up!”

Isabel Sandercock-Brown, madison’s intern, “The smell worried me because I thought it would be bitter but it’s okay. After learning about all the health benefits, I’d happily drink it. It has an unusual taste but after you have one sip, you want to have another one - even if it’s just to work out whether or not you like it!”

Danielle, madison’s work experience student, “It is just like drinking beetroot. Not sure if I’d buy it but I don’t mind it.”

Why don't you try it for yourself? Your whole body will thank you.
