On Friday I had five minutes with ‘The Body’ and found out exactly why she is called just that. I can also tell you that I utterly stuffed up.
We sat down to talk about the Australian sun care brand,
Invisible Zinc and some of their new products.
And yes, Elle Macpherson is as beautiful in real life as she is on the cover of a magazine. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I don’t think my hands could believe it either as they couldn’t stop shaking.
I almost had a Molly Meldrum moment. Well, actually I did. You know the one where he tried to interview Prince Charles and couldn’t get his words out?
Instead I fumbled at the recorder and hit the wrong button and forgot to turn it on. It happens to every journo at some point, right? It’s the thing you hear about happening to people at University and you hope that it never happens to you. Except I’m not too proud to admit, it happened while I tried to interview
Elle Macpherson! I hope she forgives me for being such a mess.
Luckily, I have a better memory than I thought and she said things to me that really resonated, making me think seriously about my lifestyle and the way I take care of my skin, body and soul.
So I can at least tell you how Macpherson stays looking so amazing. There is no quick fix. “No secret” unfortunately ladies. It’s a lot of hard work, sorry to disappoint.
She did reveal that she believes smiling is an essential part of youthfulness.
“Smiling is a big part of feeling good on the inside, I always smile,” she confessed.
She has a lot to smile about. She is estimated to be worth a whopping $60 million dollars because of her smarts.
Granted, it is her job to look good. But it is more than this to her, it’s quite easy to tell that taking care of her body is a must to keep her energy levels up and also to keep her spiritual being in check.
For a woman who constantly travels, Elle still manages to stay physically fit and keeps her body in shape with an array of activities.
“I always schedule in my trainer, so it’s not so hard when I am travelling,” she said.
“I do Bikram Yoga, spin classes, skiing, hiking and kayaking too.”
The tip here seems to be… always make time for yourself whatever the activity you choose. And try to make it enjoyable.
She keeps her beauty regime quite simple and wears minimal make-up.
“I like natural looking make-up,” Macpherson said.
She uses Revlon to achieve her easy every day look.
As part of her routine she wears
Invisible Zinc for protection and her ‘Elle Macpherson - The Body’ beauty products.
“I drink lots of water too,” she said.
Macpherson is home to promote
Invisible Zinc and its new Sports Clip On.
It is just that, invisible. It is a second skin and it’s a wonder that those Aussie cricket players haven’t swapped for the less fluoro kind.
Elle laughed when I told her she should offer it to the likes of Shane Warne and Michael Clarke.
“Their zinc is still good zinc,” she said.
But she’s also home for some much-needed time with family – she admits travelling a lot makes her miss them.
Some media has speculated that she has made the trip to Australia to spend time with her sick father, Peter Gow.
But Macpherson reassures that her father is well and recovering from prostate cancer.
“Well what is being reported by the media isn’t really true. He is doing really well. He is using his experience with prostate cancer as a positive thing and encouraging men to get a blood test to detect prostate cancer early on,” she said.
Elle has thus imparted some valuable knowledge on me, but it should also be valuable for you.
Looking at my recorder after the interview to find that my worst nightmare had come true on a day which should have been my dream come true, has ultimately been an invaluable lesson learnt.
Sometimes you just have to laugh, or smile and find a positive in things.
