style news: 23.02.10

English designer Mark Fast caused quite a stir last season when he used - shock horror - plus-size models. This year the designer has again included some more commonly proportioned women, with models ranging in size up to 14 and including US-born voluptuary Crystal Renn for his London fashion week collection. Renn, perhaps the most famous plus-size model on the scene following her moment at Jean Paul Gaultier S/S 2006, flaunted the wonders of a woman's natural curves, filling out the body-con dresses in all the right places. She immediately accepted the offer to walk in Fast’s A/W 10-11 show. The designer and model seem to have a mutual appreciation for each other, with Renn praising Fast: “Hiring healthier women to represent his clothing line is absolutely amazing.”
Fast seems to be on a mission to eliminate not only the size-0 model stigma, but also the issue of age. He has just contributed to a London fashion week photography exhibition called All Walks Beyond the Catwalk, featuring models ranging in size from 8 to 16, and in age between 18 and 65. If Fast and Renn continue to triumph, we may be seeing a whole new runway profile in years to come.

  • Good on them, but I do agree with M, they need to adjust the size and style of the clothes to be more flattering to the body shape. REPORT COMMENT

  • Putting larger ladies in tight clothing is not very fair or flattering, and is just adding shock value from the other end of the weight spectrum. HEALTHIER women??...these women are overweight, and are supposed to make you look twice at the unsightly bulges that you don't expect to see where clothing is supposed to look its best. Women of a TRULY healthy mid-range weight are too boring to put in magazines or on the catwalk. These is just more senationalistic lies to make you look. Wake up, please. REPORT COMMENT

  • These women are not overweight, they look like they are well within their healthy BMI range. The problem is the clothes are revolting! That's why none of them look very good. Even the skinniest model in the burgundy dress looks horrendous! Erlack!!!!! That brown dress is cringe-worthy. REPORT COMMENT

  • Overweight???? Whatever. REPORT COMMENT

  • Is that why they are called killer curves, so many people seem scared of curves. REPORT COMMENT
