Denim revolution

This, dear reader, is where a six-month search for the perfect pair of jeans finally comes to an end.

But first, allow me to set the scene.

Blanche, Josline and I found ourselves on James Street, a leafy, tree-lined strip of chain stores, including Mimco, French Connection and Witchery, and higher end Australian designers, such as Chelsea de Luca (gorgeous statement-making costume jewellery that wouldn’t look out of place in Rachel Zoe’s wardrobe) and Easton Pearson.

After a lunch stop at Harveys Bistro & Bar (roast pumpkin soup for me, Asian chicken salad for Josline, scallops for Blanche), we spotted a tiny arcade and decided to take a look. And this is where it happened.

You see, my absolute favourite pair of skinny blue jeans have been coming apart at the seams for some time now. I have had them patched up numerous times but I feared the day was coming when I would be forced to face facts and accept that my trusty denims were bound for the trash. The company no longer make this style of jeans (isn’t that always the case?) and my colleagues in the fashion department were getting sick of me constantly asking them, “So, have you seen any good jeans lately?”

I don’t ask for much when it comes to denim. In fact, I ask for nothing at all – no yellow stitching, no fancy embellishments, no typography on the rear pockets, nothing. Nada. Zip. Just a pair of dark denim skinny jeans with a zip fastening.

I was on the brink of despair when I stumbled into Ruby & Frankie, a boutique stocked with a selection of local and international designers – including Blank Denim, a label out of New York that bills itself as makers of fuss-free, affordable denim. My kind of label!

It was here that I spied a pair of simple, dark denim jeans. Not really trusting that this could be happening, I plucked my size out of the pile and headed for the change room. And that is when a tiny miracle occurred. The jeans fit. They were dark. No decorative motifs. No yellow stitching. They covered my lady bits. And – could this be? – only $139. The heavens opened. Angels sang. Blanche and Josline cheered.
