Beauty blog: Mrs Darling weighs in on the long hair debate

Now, when I was a girl there was this weird myth that once you turned a certain age you should cut your hair short, let me tell you, that was so last century. It is a bizarre idea really – why would aging mean you look better with short hair. Where did that eventuate from? Was it for easy maintenance or because it looked more demure, who knows.

I experimented with many cuts when I was young. The coupe sauvage (that is very sophisticated terminology for a perm) was one - believe it or not they were cool once! Then I remember having a beret (aka asymmetrical) cut when I was in Year 9. Sometime later I experimented with an extreme bowl cut. Was wanting to get my hair all one length and too impatient to wait. So I convinced my stylist to lop off my hair to the same length all the way around my head. Picture this: it was an extended fringe that started at the front and ended at the back, shaved on the sides. Looked a bit like a circumcised penis if I am to be brutally honest.

Perhaps because of the trauma of that event, I persisted in growing my all-one-length hair and have basically had long hair ever since. I have now settled on the perfect style for me. My long-suffering stylist Philip Barwick has created the “no haircut, haircut”. It’s all long layers and a fringe worn French style or swept to the side and he has worked in these parameters for a good 15 years. No surprises there. For a change of direction I can put it in a ponytail or plait. The options are endless.

The catalyst for this long hair rant was a conversation I was having with a friend who said her grandmother, at 89, has long, hair which she wears in a bun during the day, but for evening events she wears it out. Go her.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel…
