luxe to less: the Monroe pout

She wasn’t the first screen siren to fall for the look-at-me allure of red lipstick, but Marilyn Monroe was the first woman who really knew how to make ruby lips pop. Set against creamy skin and platinum hair, Monroe’s lips demanded attention in the truest of diva style and celebrities have channelled her look en masse, most recently Scarlett Johansson for Dolce & Gabbana cosmetics.

The secret to a Monroe pout, says Elsa Morgan, the make-up artist who created the looks on these pages, is a blue-red shade. “It’s the truest red, especially in photos,” she notes. “Just be aware your skin must be flawless, even if it means wearing foundation and concealer.”
